Creativity is born as a mash-up. Take 2 elements that are familiar and combine them to create something new. Purposefully making mistakes is described as an exercise in the photographers playbook.Taking a familiar photograph or art work and emulating it with a twist is a good way of coming up with something exciting.

the familiar is transformed to the unfamiliar by combination of lighting and camera settings. The camera setting here was a mistake…

In the first photograph I am reminded of Uta Barthe who takes domestic shots often blurred.

I think its interesting to see the difference in these 3 shots taken only a few seconds apart. There is a certain sadness to the lonely item placed brush side down.

Exercise 1.8. Bracketing exposures

bracketing exposures

means taking 3-5 shots of the same subject at different exposures, this gives more choice later. Manual mode, reducing shutter speed then increasing shutter speed to get the above response.

You’ve got to work with your mistakes until they look intended.Understand ? Raymond Carver.

Massimo Vitali-try shooting 100 pics that are all intentionally about making mistakes. If you insist and pretend that the mistakes are intentional you can make a real unintentional masterpiece- The Photographer’s Playbook.

Exercise 1.6 Shadows

Jung “How can I be substantial if I do not cast a shadow. I must have a dark side also if I am to be whole “

Plath ” I thought the most beautiful thing in the world must be shadow “

fencing in Ally Pally- this makes me think of Paul Strand, high contrast picture in which shadows are the main subject.
shell on the worktop- the contrast here is low- gives a soft and gentle appearance with a shadow and a secondary shadow from water.

Exercise from The Photographers Playbook

Denis Defibaugh

Make 36 unique beautiful photographs of one piece of white bond paper. Your goal is to make something beautiful from nothing.

Consider:

Equivalents

Abstraction

Expressionism

Line, shape, form space

Chairusco

You may not cut the paper but you may folderol r crumple. Shoot on a white backgrounding studio.Only the paper

This exercises really interesting- out of the 36 photographs I produced maybe 6 which I would consider beautiful. I didn’t have quite enough kit- it would have been good to have more lighting options and also a chair to stand on to get a different view point. I think I could do this exercise repeatedly. Its an exercise that could be transferred to other subjects.

Abstraction
Line and shape
Equivalents
Expressionism- softness
